Born Friedericke Christiane Marie Kress, in the beautiful little village of Ingelfingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany, she was known simply as Marie. Her father, George Friedrich Kress was proprietor of a vinyard. He and his wife, Sofie Katherine Karoline Luise (Seber) Kress were the parents of eleven children, Marie being the fifth. One week after her 9th birthday, twin brothers were born to her parents, but they lived only 1 and 2 days. The next child, a sister, born two weeks after Marie's birthday, lived only a few hours. Sometime before 1891, Marie, with some others of her siblings migrated to London, and became employed, she as a domestic servant. At age 24, Marie married, at Whitechapel in London, Franz Friedrich Hoffman. The couple had 7 children, five born in London and two more born after the family emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada in 1907. In 1916, the family migrated further, into the United States, where they lived first in Livingston, Montana, then Spokane, Washington and finally to Seattle, Washington, where she obtained her naturalized citizenship in 1939. Marie devoted her life to her family and lived three days past her 93rd birthday, passing on January 4, 1966.
