He was one of the first to respond to President Lincoln's call for volunteers. He enlisted in Company C, First Missouri Volunteers, age 21, and was involved a number of battles. At the battle of Wilson's Creek MO he was badly wounded, suffering the loss of a leg. He went on to marry, have 3 children, and own his own cigar-making company.46th Iowa Inf.
