Mary was born on October 17, 1878 at Kiobagh, Crimea, Russia to Johann and Christina Knittel. She immigrated to the United States with her parents, two brothers and a sister. They arrived on Oct. 27, 1885.

The family first settled in Tripp, South Dakota. In 1890, they moved to Butte, Nebraska. Her parents owned a farm one mile west of Butte. In 1893, Mary was confirmed by Pastor Walther in the first confirmation class in the new church at Butte.

On May 27, 1897, she married Konstantine Stirm at Butte, Nebraska. They had ten children. Two of these children died at an early age. They were John F, Helena M, Emma L, Raymond W, Hulda M, Robert M, Paul H, William, Rosie and Frieda.

In 1905, her husband and brother, Fred, traveled to South Dakota hoping to have their names drawn for a homestead. Each of their names were drawn, and their new land sat side by side. Their homesteads were located on the southwest edge of Gregory County, South Dakota, just ten miles from the Nebraska border.

Konstantine and Mary farmed on their homestead until 1919, when they moved to Lodi, California.
