Lawrence Bernardy, age 88 of Wabasso died Saturday evening as the result of an auto accident. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M Wednesday, October 1, 2008 in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday September 30, 2008 and continue Wednesday one hour prior to services in St. Anne's Catholic Church. There will be a parish prayer service Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. followed by a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary. Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice in lieu of flowers. Military rites will be conducted by the Wabasso American Legion Post. On-line condolences may be sent to sunsetfuneralandcremation.com. Arrangements are being handled by the Sunset Funeral and Cremation Association of Echo and Wabasso.

Lawrence Nicholas Bernardy was born December 21, 1919 in Lucan to John and Catherine (Manderscheid) Bernardy. He was baptized, had first communion and was confirmed in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaforth. He grew up in the Seaforth area and graduated from Wabasso High School. Lawrence entered the U.S. Army serving during W.W.II. On September 13, 1947 he was united in marriage to Leona Kramer in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaforth. They lived in Belview where he owned and operated his beauty shop. In 1953 they moved to Wabasso where he owned and operated the Brau Red and White Grocery which later became the Bernardy's Grocery Store. He continued to operate the grocery store until retiring in 1987. Leona died on September 5, 1989. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Wabasso American Legion, Wabasso Lions Club, Wabasso Commercial Club and the 78th Fighter Group. He was very active in the community serving as an election judge, with the blood mobile, the American Red Cross, meals on wheels and drove for many years for Western Community Action. He was named Redwood County Senior Citizen of the year and had become a judge for selection of Redwood Co. Senior Citizens. Lawrence loved to travel, attending the 78th Fighter Group Meetings every year but one, traveling to Europe and a recent trip to Rome. He loved to garden, can, play cards, visit and was widely known for his "Bernardy Family History".

He is survived by his children; Becky (Damon) Farber of Minneapolis, Bonita (Bruce) Stueven of Carlos, Bethel (Dick) Storch of Redwood Falls, Brenda Bernardy of Chaska, and daughter-in-law Arlene Bernardy of Savage. Also surviving are his 6 grandchildren; Rachel Farber, Mark Farber, Max Stueven, Rhonda (Eric) Storch Madsen, Jeremy Bernardy and Josh Bernardy, 2 great grandchildren; Riley and Elizabeth Madsen and his siblings; Tillie (Alphonse) Guetter of Wabasso, Gen Rohlik of Wabasso, Norbert Bernardy of Lucan, Ade (LaVonne) Bernardy of Seaforth and Marvin (Maureen) Bernardy of Seaforth. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Catherine, his wife Leona, his son Bill on November 14, 2005, 2 brothers; Leonard and Isadore, a brother-in-law George Rohlik and a sister-in-law Lucy Bernardy.
