John Austin "Jack" Korkowski was born on January 9, 1933, in Brandon, Minnesota, the son of John and Alice (Roers) Korkowski. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Ann's Catholic Church and graduated from Brandon High School in 1950.

Jack served his country during the Korean War and when he returned from the war he returned to Brandon and worked at Korkowski Implement.

On June 4, 1956, Jack was united in marriage to Virginia Mentele at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria. The couple farmed near Brandon during their marriage and Jack continued to work at Korkowski Implement.

Jack served as a volunteer on the Brandon Fire Department for more than 30 years and was very active in the St. Ann's parish. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus where he had held the office of Grand Knight. Following his retirement he enjoyed gardening and especially enjoyed giving much of his vegetable crop away.

Jack died on Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home at the age of 71 years following a three year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife: Virginia Korkowski of Brandon; children: Mary (Gary) Lindert of Rosemount; and Scott Korkowski of Brandon; grandchildren: Eric Lindert and Brett Lindert of Rosemount; sisters: Arliss Vollbrecht of Morgan; and Joan Korkowski of Minneapolis; sister-in-law Georgiana Hoirup of Minot, ND; brothers-in-law: Donald Mentele of Beloit, WI; and Terry Mentele of Long Prairie; and many nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers-in-law: Bill Vollbrecht, Raymond Johnson and Peter Hoirup.

Funeral mass was held on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, from the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Brandon with Reverend Eugene Lemm and Reverend Richard Heid concelebrating. Evelyn Lanners was the organist and Bernie Thoennes was the soloist. Interment was in the church cemetery. Bill Vollbrecht, Mike Vollbrecht, Dennis Bergquist, Terry Mentele, Bob Vollbrecht and Paul Lehn served as pallbearers. The Brandon American Legion Post 278 accorded military honors.

Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
