Services for Lawrence H. Rieken, 77, were held Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000 at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. Burial ws held in the church cemetery. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are five children: William Rieken of Marion, Thomas (Donna) Rieken of Springfield, MO., Marjorie (Steve) Schneiter of Monticello, Linda Ken) Duncan of Coralville and Patricia (Jody) Krueger of Iowa City; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Marshall of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; and his mother-in-law, Marjorie Andrews of Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; and a sisgter, Evelyn Harms.
Lawrence Henry Rieken was born April 17, 1923, in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa, the son of William T and Gesena Hayen Rieken. He received his early education in the rural schools of the area, and graduated from Monticello Community Schools in 1943. He started farming with his parents.
On Feb 16, 1947, Lawrence H. Rieken and Ruth E andrews were married at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed near Scotch Grove for several years. In 1957, they moved to a farm in Wayne township. Rieken was a Pride Seed Corn representative and sponsored the Pride Bowling team for many years. He also operated a milk route for Farmers Mutual Creamery and was a school bus driver as well. As he retired from active farming, he sold insurance for HCH. The couple moved to Monticello in 1988. His wife preceded him in death on May 29, 1994
He was a lifelong member of Wayne Zion Lutheran Church and served in many of the church offices. He also was active in the Lions Club and served as treasurer for many years.
Memorials may be directed to Wayne Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice.
