Gary was born in Indiana before the family moved to Roundup, Montana. He enlisted in the Army, at a recruiting office in Butte, Montana.
When Gary arrived in Vietnam, he was assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, USARV. Gary died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire when C Company was engaged by hostile forces.
