James Asberry Wood was the son of William Wood and Dorcas Lemasters Wood. He married Francis Josephine Circle in 1864. They had 5 children, Wesley Ransom, Albert, James, Josephas, and Josephene. He married Ruhama Pyles in 1884. They had 7 children, Jacob, Mary, Elizabeth, Edith, Lester, Vandiver, and Sherman Wood.
James served in the Civil War in the 11th Regiment, WV Infantry from 1861-1864.

James A. Wood, 21, enlisted 5 Sept 1861 at Belton, Marshall County, (W) Va. He originally served under Captain Lewis Smith, who was dismissed 14 Sep 1863. George W. Parriott was commissioned Captain of Company "H" on 12 Oct 1863 and served until his term expired 14 Nov 1864. The 11th Regiment mustered out 17 June 1865 but the recruits (including those who re-enlisted) were transferred briefly to the 10th Regiment and finally mustered out 9 Aug 1865.

James A. Wood son of William and Dorcas (Lemasters) Wood, age 21, enlisted in the Union Army, Company H, 11th Regiment under Capt. Lewis Smith at Belton, [Marshall County] W. Va. on Sept 5, 1861 for 3 years.
He enlisted for 3 more years DOCUMENT in January of 1864 and was mustered out in August of 1865 with the war being over. DOCUMENT
The following was copied from James' pension records on file at the Dept. of Interior, Pension Division: The Muster Rolls of Company "H" of that Regiment, contain the following evidence of service: It is stated he was enrolled Sept 5, 1861 at Belton, Va. (W.Va.) for 3 years. He reinlisted as a Vet. Jan 4, 1865 for 3 years. Roll for September & October 1864 reports him absent in hospital, wounded at Wincheter, Va. October 19, 1864. He was in action at Winchester, Va. Sept. 19, 1864 & at Cedar Creek, Va. Regiment return for October 1864 reports him in hospital since October 19, 1864. Jan. & Feb. Present. He was transferred to Co. "H" 10th W.Va. Volunteers June 17, 1865 and was mustered out of service with that company as Sergt. August 9, 1865. DOCUMENT
James was wounded in the thigh October 19, 1864 at Cedar Creek, Va. and was in a Baltimore, Md. hospital until the end of Dec.
The 11th Infantry was organized from Oct. of 1861 to Oct. 1862. Its early service being the western part of W.Va., mainly on the line of the B & O in Wilkinson's Brigade, Kelley's Division, Eighth Army Corps. They spent so much time in the mountains they nicknamed themselves the "Mountain Creepers" or "Buzzards" because of the many forced marches they endured in the Alleghenies.

In 1864, James A. Woods married Frances Josephine Circle in Mason County, West Virginia. She died and James A. married Ruhama Pyles about 1884, based on the 1900 census, at which time they said they had been married for 16 years.
