William Emmanuel Dumler October 25, 1917 - August 22, 2010

Wilhelm Emmanuel Dumler ("Bill") was born on the family farm in Milberger, southwest of Russell, Kansas on October 25, 1917. Father and mother were David R. Dumler and Sarah Schwindt Dumler. Bill weighed 16 lbs. 4 oz. when born and was the fifth of six children. Siblings include (they are all named with their birth dates)

Bill was a first generation American, raised on the homestead, spoke German as native language and learned English in the country school. He was proud of the chicken house that he and his brother helped build. They quarried the Russell limestone themselves, carrying it to the farm on a sled pulled by horses. Bill was a farmer at heart!

Bill attended High School in Hoisington, Kansas while helping his aunt, Christina Schwindt Schriwise and her husband, John, with their farm. His work included taking care of the cows, milking and delivering the milk to the hospital and others in town. After the death of his Uncle John Schriwise (died 1934), Bill was the driver and travel companion for his Aunt Christine. They enjoyed many trips including the World's Fair in New York in 1939.

After his High School graduation from Hoisington in 1937, he majored in Agriculture Economics and Animal Husbandry at Kansas State University in Manhattan. In the fall of 1939 Bill met Vera Lorene Morgan, a Home Economics Senior from Hugoton, Kansas. It was love at first sight. He married his dance partner for life on November 1, 1941, at the Methodist Church in Manhattan, Kansas.

After four years at Kansas State University, Bill took a 90 day mechanical Engineering course at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. In 1941 he was hired by Boeing Aircraft, in Wichita, Kansas as an aircraft draftsman. Bill worked at Boeing through the end of World War II and on into 1946. While in Wichita, Bill and Vera started their family. Joyce Joan was born May 7, 1943 and Janet Sue was born January 5, 1945. During these early years together they developed many wonderful lifelong friends.

After a short stint in the life insurance business, in Winfield, Kansas, Bill transferred to Denver, Colorado in 1948. He soon changed careers and went to work for Armour and Company, where he happily worked until the plant closed in 1957. He was active in the Denver Feed and Grain Association, Denver Ag and Livestock Club and many other related organizations. He loved animals and always attended the annual Stock Show.

Bill's third child, David Scott Dumler, was born on October 28, 1949, in Denver. The family attended Park Hill Methodist Church and added new life long friends fondly referred to as the "Gang".

In 1952 Bill moved his family to the country - Arvada, Colorado. A dream come true for this farmer at heart. He had four acres, a horse, calves, chickens, rabbits and a beautiful view!

In 1959, after a short stint of running his own by-product business Bill was hired by Sanfax Chemical Co., which later became Oxford Chemical Company and ultimately purchased by Sara Lee Corporation. Bill managed accounts throughout the five western states and traveled over one million miles by car through this beautiful country. The family remembers wonderful summer vacations traveling with Dad with while he made his business calls in Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Idaho and Colorado. Bill retired from this job he loved in 1982.

In the late 1960's Bill and Vera joined Ports of Call Travel Club in Denver. They visited all fifty states, over 40 countries, 7 continents and traveled over one quarter of a million miles by air, making it all the way around the world. They also traveled in their motor home throughout the United States, heading south for the winter months.

In 1973 Bill and Vera sold the "farm" and headed to Heather Gardens, a golf and retirement community in Aurora, Colorado. Looking out over the golf course, this was their home for the next 31 years. Bill had a busy, active life and made many wonderful memories and friends in Aurora. They loved visiting Mesa, Arizona in the winter and after Bill fully retired they began making Mesa their winter home, where friends and family were welcome and all loved to visit.

Bill was a man who fulfilled his commitments. He had unending faith in God and he was active in Christ centered and Bible teaching churches throughout his life. He was an avid member of the Rotary and was proud of his perfect attendance for over 30 years. He loved taking Rotary trips and enjoyed attending meetings worldwide.

Bill always liked to keep active and his hands busy no matter where they were living. His hobbies included golfing, the Elk's Club, rock hounding, lapidary, wood carving, silver-smithing, gardening, cooking, and making rock clocks for everyone. He loved music and dancing with the woman he adored, his wife of 68 1/2 years. Bill and Vera moved to Longmont, Colorado in 2004 to be closer to their family.

Bill was an honest, kind and gentle man with a strong handshake. He was thankful for the many blessings in his life including his children, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and his many wonderful friends.

Bill Dumler, our beloved father, entered life eternal on August 22, 2010 and will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. He loved everyone he touched and he literally touched everyone he met.
