He was born May 24, 1896, near Frankfort, Kansas to Jacob and Mary (Wapp) Wagner. He lived on the same farm near Frankfort for more than eighty years.

Matt was married to Marie Adams May 23, 1928 in Frankfort, Kansas.

He was a member of the Annunciation Catholic Church, Frankfort, Kansas.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Marie, on May 1, 1981, and an infant son, Richard William, in 1931.

Survivors include one daughter Mrs. Mildred Esser, Pilot Grove, Missouri; four sons, Harold F. Wagner, Lincoln, Nebraska, Charles Lee Wagner, Kansas City, Kansas, James E. Wagner, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Robert L. Wagner, Frankfort, Kansas; two sister, Mrs. Anna Stueve, Emmett, Kansas, and Sister Mary Ellen Wagner, O.S.B. Atchison, Kansas; seventeen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 1985, in the Annunciation Catholic Church, Frankfort,
Kansas with Father Bob Hasenkamp officiating. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Frankfort, Kansas.
