On Sep 22,1894 Hans Peter Sorensen arrived in New York from Helsingborg, Sweden aboard the Slavonia with his wife, Birthe and his children;
Ole Peter, Axel, Hulda, Laura, Hans and Alma. The manifest declares they were bound for Cedar Falls, Iowa

Hans Peter Sorensen at time of immigration was 42 years and 5 months. The 1894 and 1896 Cedar Falls City Directories showed a Hans Sorensen, a laborer living at 418 Lincoln. The 1920 US Census showed a Hans Sorensen, age 64, born in Denmark, naturalized in 1900. Hans Peter died 1/9/1932 of heart disease and osteomyolitis. According to the death certificate from Los Angeles California he lived with AC Sorensen and resided in California for 8 years. (from Wayne & Gail Sorensen)

Hans Peter Sorensen and his family arrived in Cedar Falls Iowa in the fall of 1894. The first recorded history for Hans Peter was the Cedar Falls City Directory of 1894 that showed him living at 418 Lincoln. At that time 418 Lincoln was in East Cedar City. All buildings on 418 Lincoln were destroyed in the flood of 2008. But the property is still there nestled up to the Cedar River. A beautiful area. Across the street is a very old 2 story brick building. The Cedar Falls Historical Society thought that it may have been a school at one time. The building is no longer in use, but the Sorensen children may have attended school in that building. We used the 418 Lincoln address as we attempted to trace the Sorensens.

Another tidbit provided by the Cedar Falls Historical Society was that the first born male was frequently named after the father's father. The second born male after the mother's father, and the third born male after the father. That may explain why the son Hans was not the oldest child.

Another family history started in the 1970's by David Johnson noted that Hans Peter and Bertha Laura had 7 children - Ole Peter, Axel, Millie, Christina, Hulda, Alfred, and Alma. It will take some research to determine if these are the same children that are listed on the Ellis Island documents. There is also the possibility that the 2 youngest children were raised by another family named Rich after Bertha died in 1896.

Hans Peter and Birtha have been buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls Iowa. The grave site has new memorial stones. However, Greenwood Cemetery does not have a record of when the new stones were placed. It is felt that the stones were placed probably prior to 1995. This may mean that there is still family in that area.
