Phillip B. Muehlbauer served in the Union Army from November 2, 1862 until his discharge in New Orleans on November 2, 1865. He was in Company F of the 1st Regiment of the U.S. Cavalry, attached to the Army of the Potomac, and thus they engaged in the same battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Rapidan Campaign.
During the Civil War he was called "The Red Devil" because of his red hair and the way he fought in battle.
In 1864, Company F was placed under the command of Phil Sheridan, and engaged in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, including Sheridan's Raid and Appomattox Station, and were present at the surrender of General Lee at the Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.
