MERRIMAN, Neb. - Verla Arlean Thayer, 64, Merriman passed away Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.

She was born July 13, 1946 in Martin, S.D., to Jesse and Cassie (Gray) Clausen, one of nine children. She was educated in the Bennett County Schools and obtained a Bachelor's degree from Oglala Lakota College.

Verla married Lester J. Thayer on April 17, 1961, in Rushville. To this union six children were born: Verlene, Verna, LeAnn, Les, Cassie and Malena. For the majority of their marriage they lived in Merriman where Verla worked for Olson's Greenhouse.
In 1980, Lester and Verla bought the greenhouse and proceeded to establish one of the best greenhouses around. People came from all over to purchase Verla's plants and flowers and were always greeted with a smile.
She took great pleasure in spending time with family and friends and caring for the elderly in the community.

Survivors include her husband, Lester Merriman; her children, Verlene (Mark) Zacher, Les (Jannette) Thayer, and Cassie (Jerry) Schweigerdt, all of Rapid City, S.D., LeAnn (Mike) Hinton, Indianapolis, Ind., and Malena (Scott) Richardson, Chadron; her grandchildren, Tony (Amanda) Zacher, Jessica Zacher, Derek Larson, and Randee and Jordyn Thayer, all of Rapid City, Andrew (Tamara) Tuggle, Fort Wayne, Ind., Tyler and Bryce Hinton, Indianapolis, and Brayden, Dayton and Kinley Richardson, all of Chadron; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ellen McAdam, Marge Schaffer and Cora Sager.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Verna; three brothers; two sisters; and both parents.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home in Gordon.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the Merriman Town Hall with the Rev. Tom Cobb officiating. Burial will follow at the Merriman Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Verla's honor.
