Marie Josephine Shepherd was born April 15, 1920, in Shawnee to Joseph Matthew Sontag and Lula Margaret (Scott) Sontag. She married Leon David Shepherd May 13, 1939. They were married 69 years.

She attended St. Benedict School and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1938. She attended business school at Neff's Business College.

She was the bookkeeper and secretary in her husband's construction company until 1960 when they moved to California where she was a secretary at the Southern Baptist General Convention of California for 12 years. She later was a secretary and office nurse for an orthopedic specialist. She retired in 1976 and moved with her husband back to Shawnee. She was a member of Harvard Terrace Baptist Church, Fresno, Calif.

She and her husband built their retirement home in Bethel Acres. She raised caged birds for 15 years and helped her husband raise German Shepherds. Her joy was in her little toy poodle, Mickey. She made beautiful quilts and crocheted many afghans. She made sure each grandchild and great-grandchild had one. Sometimes it was a crib quilt made before they were born.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Leon Shepherd; her parents, Joe and Lula Sontag; two sisters, Dorothy Lou Sontag and Edith L. Whited; a son-in-law, O. Duane Chancellor.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty Chancellor of Shawnee, Susan and Walter Hopkins of Boonville, Calif, Mary and Gary Caskey of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Leona Shepherd of McMinnville, Ore.; one grandson, Terry and Melody Chancellor of Tecumseh; 8 granddaughters, Delaina and Henry Coleman of Shawnee, Anita and John Morgan of Prague, Audrey and Mark Zika and Heather and Peter Zischka, all of Livermore, Calif, Rebecca and Ray Daniszewski of Erie, Penn, Susan Caskey of Ft. Worth, Tandy and Drew Voit of McMinnville, and Kara and John Berwith of Fresno; 9 great-grandsons and 7 great-granddaughters, Jennifer and Travis John Morgan, Henry Duane and Hope Coleman, Wyatt Chancellor, Turner, Tucker, and Sydney Zischka, Emma and Noah Zika, Oliver Voit, Abby, Jake, Roie and Kody Berwith and Amanda Cooper; one sister-in-law, Mary Shepherd; three nieces, Jacquline Mankin, Bessie Purcell and Daisy Pippin; and many other nieces and nephews and friends.

The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and the staff of Sunset Nursing Home for the wonderful care they gave mother. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at Walker Funeral Home in Shawnee. Burial will be in the Masonic Garden of Resthaven Memorial Park, Shawnee.
