For 14 years Mr. Wittig spent his summer days in the park with children who were there under the recreation program. He had been crippled since birth.
To amuse the children, he took up wood carving and developed near-professional skill in turning out miniature furniture and other items for their play. A recreation official said yesterday. "He was the first to come in the morning and the last to leave at night. He will be missed."
Children of the park conferred an honorary and perpetual "mayorship" on him in a vote five years ago.
He was born here Jan. 27, 1907, the son of John G and Jeanette Wittig.
He leaves his father and stepmother, Mrs. Sadie Wittig, of Decatur; eight brothers, Albert, Louis, Kenneth, Leo, William and Bernard, all of Decatur. Delmar, seriously ill in St. Mary's hospital and Robert of the U. S. army; three sisters. Mrs. Catherine Peters and Lois Wittig of Decatur and Mrs. Freda Coffman of Gardenia, Calif., and a step-sister, Mrs. Olive Oglesby, Decatur.
The body is in the J. J. Moran & Sons funeral home where friends may call after noon today. Requiem high mass will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in St. Thomas Catholic church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
