Daniel L. Cyrus
Daniel L. CYRUS, A 1992 Rochester High graduate, was beaten to death at a Huntington County campsite early Thursday morning.
Cyrus, 20, was reportedly beaten with a piece of firewood during a dispute over a campsite at the Lost Bridge East Campground, on Salamonie Reservoir southwest of Huntington and west of Wabash. He had been living in Ekhart County.
High school principal Dennis ELLER remembers Cyrus as a student who turned his life around during high school. "Dan had trouble early on, both academically and socially, but he really turned himself around and he was well-liked by the students and faculty," Eller said.
Teachers voted Cyrus the most improved boy during his senior year. He also received an award from the Lions Club for being the most improved boy.
Cyrus died after a night of partying turned into a deadly brawl between two groups of campers. At least four other people were injured in the fight, including Cyrus's friend James YODER of Elkhart County. Yoder was treated at Huntington Memorial Hospital. Others involved received only minor injuries.
Huntington County Prosecutor John Branham said blows to the head killed Cyrus.
At about 4 a.m. Thursday, Kris LONG, 18, Rochester, enterd the Wabash police station. He was injured and told police he had been beaten at the reservoir. He was treated and released at Wabash County Hospital. Another man was taken to the hospital but refused treatment. His name was not released.
Huntington and Wabash County police questioned a number of young men, reportedl from Huntington County, about their part in the incident. At least three are believed to be juveniles. Their names were not released.
No arrests have been made.
Those questioned were camped two sites away from Cyrus and Yoder.
Camper Gwendolyn BURRESS says she heard a "commotion, music and foul language," from Cyrus's campsite and saw two groups gathering. At about 4 a.m. Yoder showed up at her camper begging for help;. "He siad, "Please help me - my buddy's laying over there dying," Burress said.
Yoder was also wounded. "The back of his head was just a mass of blood," Burress said. "He (Yoder) said they (the assailants) were going to come back and kill everyone," Burress said. "He said they had a gun."
Yoder told Burress that his friend was beaten with firewood. Wabash police were told that some of the people involved had lead pipes.
One of Yoder's friends sought help from other campers . "She woke us up beating on the top of my husband's head, saying ‘I need help,'" said Cecilla VICKERS of Silver Lake. "She was so hyper we couldn't make any sense of what she was saying except that ‘one of them's been hurt real bad because I tripped over him.'"
Vickers said the woman, who identified herself as either Brittany or Brandy LOVELESS, said her friends were attacked.
Mrs. Bob Vickers took the frantic and barefooted woman to the campground office where they met Burress and the bloody Yoder.
Yoder and Loveless didn't say what started the fight. Polce are looking for a motive. "That's part of what they (police) are trying to piece together now," Branham said.
Cyrus was a member of the varsity basketball team during his senior year at Rochester. During the season he played in 10 games. He was on the golf team for theee years and was a member of the Killer Bees, a school pep organization, and Students Against Drunk Driving.
"He was just a good kid who I really liked," Eller said.
