Richard was born Oct. 6, 1916, in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of Leo Gregory and Veronica Ann (White) Tegler.

He attended St. Francis School and Brothers School in Dyersville. In 1933, Richard moved with his family to the Lamont area and helped his father on the family farm.

On June 10, 1941, Richard was united in marriage to Teresa D. Ruden at the Immaculate Conception parish in Masonville, Iowa.

The couple settled on the Tegler family farm, where they farmed until 1997, when they moved to their home in Manchester. Richard was a 56-year member of Immaculate Conception Church, Masonville, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Holy Name Society. Richard was a member of the NFO (National Farmers Organization), serving as an area delegate, and served as the president of the Mount Vernon Country School. He enjoyed fishing and playing softball and was infamous for his sense of humor.

A kind and gentle heart, Richard's life was in his working of the land. He was a naturalist organic farmer who loved raising his crops and livestock. His greatest love was his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.

Herbert Tegler of St. Joseph's Parish, Earlville and Dr. Wayne and LaVonne Tegler of Iowa City; and two sisters and their husbands, Thelma and Frank Broemmel and Marjorie and Jim Simms, all of Denver, Colo.
