"Dr. Robert C. Grasberger Jr., 33, a vascular surgeon and former Media resident, collapsed and died of heart failure Saturday while playing basketball in New York City. He lived in New York.

A magna cum laude graduate of Colby College and a Rhodes scholar-nominee, he graduated from Thomas Jefferson University in 1979, served a residency in surgery and was chief resident at Boston University.

He was completing work as a research fellow in vascular surgery at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx at the time of his death.

Surviving are his wife, S. Lynn Grasberger; father, Robert C.; mother, I. Christine; grandfather, Rudolph Shermann, and three brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Presbyterian Church, Baltimore Avenue and Church Street, Media."

At the time of his death, Dr. Grasberger was a research fellow in vascular surgery at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York.

Dr. Grasberger and his wife, Dr. S. Lynn Hughes Grasberger, received their medical training in the Boston area. He was chief surgical resident at BU Medical Center in 1985 and 1986. And the couple lived in Greater Boston from 1979 until last year.

He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1979.

Dr. Grasberger was an avid runner and competed in the Boston Marathon twice as well as the Philadelphia Marathon. He also enjoyed playing basketball.

He was a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Besides his wife, he leaves his parents, Robert C. and Ilse (Schurmann) Grasberger Sr. of Media, Pa.; three brothers, Stephen K. of Reading, Mass., Bruce L. of Bethesda, Md., and Donald M. of Philadelphia, and his maternal grandfather, Rudolph Schurmann of Stanton, N.J.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Media Presbyterian Church, Media, Pa. Burial will be private."
