WAVERLY HALL, GA — Herbert Rainey Johnston, 83, of Waverly Hall died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at his residence.

Mr. Johnston was born April 23, 1927 in Buena Vista, Georgia, son of the late Vera Celeste Culpepper Johnston and Neal Hooper Johnston. He was a member of Waverly Hall Methodist Church and was a graduate of Jordan Vocational High School where he was a life time member of the PTA and Booster Club. He retired from the Columbus Fire Department after 34 years. He was the First Fire Marshall of the Columbus Fire Department. In 1965 he founded the Fire Prevention and Inspection Division, serving from 1949-1961 in Fire Supression. He was the former Secretary of the Georgia State Fireman Association. He received an Associate Degree in Fire Science from Chattahoochee Valley Community College and a Criminal Justice Degree from Columbus State University. He was a member of the Columbus/Ft. Benning Shrine Club, Al Sihah Temple, York Rite and Scotish Rite. He was Potentate of Al Sihah Temple and for over 35 years he was the Chairman of Columbus Ft. Benning Shrine Circus. He was a member of Masonic Columbia Lodge #7 since October 1948 where he was a 32 Mason. He was also a member of Muscogee Lions Club since 1967 having served as past President, Deputy District Governor and Zone Chairman. He was preceded in death by his son, Marco Joseph Uzelac; siblings, Grace Anthony, James H. Johnston, Lois Tomblin, Samuel Johnston, Sara Huffenberger, Vera Alexander and Neal Johnston. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Tatum Uzelac Johnston of Waverly Hall, GA; daughter, Rita Johnston Lowman and husband, Gary, Sr. of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Gary Lowman, Jr. of Washington D.C. and Clint Lowman of Sarasota, FL; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
