Walter Richard Wanner, age 77, passed away at his home in Boise, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, after a courageously fought battle with leukemia.

Walt was born on December 5, 1932, in a farmhouse on the North Dakota prairie. He grew up in North Dakota and Elk Grove, California. As a child, he was studious and also held down a variety of farming jobs in order to help support his German speaking family. He graduated from high school in June of 1950.

Initially Walt worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state of California. In September of 1952, he entered the United States Coast Guard. He was stationed in Seattle, Washington, and later in Groton, Connecticut, where he completed Radarman School. He was then stationed in Tacoma, Washington, with the Coast Guard Cutter Falgaut. He spent time on Midway Island doing search and rescue duty, completed exercises with the United States Navy in Guam, and then went to Yokusuka, Japan. Surviving much inclement weather in the North Pacific, his ship nearly rolled over, resulting in the ship being decommissioned when it reached the Naval shipyard in Vallejo, California. Walt was then assigned to LORAN stations in Washington, Oshima and New York Harbor. He later rejoined the Coast Guard Cutter Campbell, which was the flagship for the Coast Guard at that time. During his service with the Campbell, he was involved in the rescue operation to find survivors from the Italian luxury liner, Andrea Doria. He was honorably discharged from Coast Guard in 1956.

Walt then went to work with the Aerojet General Corporation in Roseville, California and was involved in building the first submarine launched missile, the Polaris. It was during this time that he met a tall, sexy, whistling, pony-tailed, good looking girl named Sandy.

Walt and Sandy were married on March 7, 1959. They lived in Roseville, California, where their daughter, Lisa, was born and later their son, Brian. Walt worked with Aerojet until 1970.

In late 1969, Walt accepted employment with the INEL in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He worked on the LOFT project and later was named the Assistant Controller for the Budget and Planning Department. He was employed with INEL until he accepted a partnership position in a homebuilding company with his wife's brother, Gary Hunemiller, in 1974. By 1976, Walt and Gary had two construction companies, and Walt assumed ownership of Statewide Construction, Inc.
Walt was well known in the Treasure Valley for his homebuilding company, and later for his land developments, including numerous residential subdivisions.

Walt was best known for his intelligence, attention to detail and his strong work ethic on behalf of his family. He was a responsible, loving gentleman who will be greatly missed by many. He and his wife loved deeply and traveled extensively and enjoyed many vacations; their cabins in Terrace Lakes, Donnelly and the river in Marsing and good times with family and friends. Walt could always be counted on to barbeque steaks for all and he enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time in the mountains.

Walt is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughter, Lisa Sisler; son, Brian Wanner (friend Jodi); grandsons, Andrew Wanner and Dustan Powell; younger brother, Ed Wanner; nephews, Tim Wanner (Tara), Michael Wanner; niece, Lori Wanner; step grandchildren, Shayla Sisler, Claire Sisler; and great grandson, Gavin Knowles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Emma Wanner; older brother, Leonard Wanner; and nephew, Greg Wanner.

A viewing for family and friends will be held at The Chapel of The Chimes Funeral Home in Meridian, Idaho, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Thursday, December 2, 2010. Funeral services will be held at The Cloverdale Church of God on Friday, December 3, 2010, at 2:00 pm.

Graveside services will follow at Meridian Cemetery for those who wish to attend. While flowers are greatly appreciated, so are donations to The American Red Cross, in appreciation for the blood they supply for those in need.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Ben Bridges, Mountain States Tumor Institute and the skilled and compassionate nurses of Four South/MSTI.
