Arnold was the father of Stephen Dennis, Michael Arnold, Ruth Ann and John Paul Hoefft. He was grandfather to Stephen Jr, Cynthia Marie, and James Allen Hoefft. He was a farmer at Maeys Station, Illinois.
Arnold was coming from Valmeyer with a gas tank on his truck at the Voelker crossing when his truck was hit in the back by a train, knocking it off the road but causing him to hit his head. He later died from the injury at the Red Bud Hospital. He loved life and his grandchildren. He was greatly missed. After the accident, His wife petitioned in Springfield and got all of Monroe County railroad crossings to get guardrails to protect other accidents. It would have saved his life had they been there.
