He was the son of Frederick and Alma (Mueller) Thoms. He graduated from Maine Township High School in 1946 after which he worked for Public Service Co. He was married to Eleanor M. Sievers on June 25, 1949. In 1950 they moved to Wisconsin where they farmed on Highway NN for 3 years. Then Roy built up a bulk milk trucking business which he owned for 18 years. After he sold the business, he worked as an insurance agent for American Family Insurance for 25 years and was made agent of the year in 1990. He retired in 1993. Roy was a member and past president of Elkhorn Lion's Club of over 25 years and later joined Elkhorn Kiwanis. He was a volunteer fireman in Elkhorn for over 25 years, and for several years after retiring he was a fire inspector. Roy belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church of Elkhorn where he served on the church council for 7 years and also as treasurer for many years. He volunteered with the church to haul government subsidies and was a member of the Elkhorn Chamber of Commerce. He also belonged and sponsored a men's bowling league team for over 15 years. In 1995 he joined the Evergreen Golf Club's men's team.
