Harvey's given name at birth was "Joseph Harvey Francis Lavoie".

His father, Joseph Thomas Lavoie immigrated to Burlington, Vermont between 1882-1888 from St-Francois, Petite Riviere, Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada, with his wife Mary. Harvey had eight siblings; 5 brothers, 3 sisters, two who died as infants.

His family history is one to be proud of. His ancestors were the first to go to Canada from France and help settle it. There is much written about the Lavoye's. It is said that all the Lavoye's (no matter how they spell Lavoye) in Canada and the United States comes from only two men - Rene and Pierre de LaVoye who immigrated from France to New France (Quebec, Canada) in the early 1600s.

Both sides (mother & father) of Harvey's family were cultivators (farmers) who owned their farms in the Petite-Riviere, Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada area.

The Canada French were very religious and when you look at Canadian birth records they always started their children's birth names with Marie or Joseph after the Saints.
