Civil War Union Major General. He was the Chief Topographical Engineer of the Union Army of the Potomac at the July 1-3, 1863, Battle of Gettysburg. He is credited with recognizing the significance of a hill called Little Round Top and, in the heat of battle, commandeered troops to sieze and hold it, which became a Union "Fortress" during the battle. He later commanded the II and, subsequently, the V Army Corps until the closing days of the Civil War. General Warren's statue stands on Little Round Top today.
