She married Christopher Heinrich Hartlage in Germany on March 1, 1877. The family, including four children, left Germany in October 1888, arriving at Galveston the same month. They first lived in Burton, Washington County, Texas, but moved to Rosenberg, Fort Bend County in 1895 when Henry bought a farm. Marie died shortly after giving birth to a child in September 1896. The child only lived 3 days.
Her grave was marked by a stone, but years later the tombstone could not be located by family members. It was speculated that it floated down the Brazos River during a major flood in Richmond, Texas.
