Daughter of Charles W. Varney & Matilda Shepherd. Barbara graduated from Rochester High School, received a degree in early childhood education from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. in 1936 and attended graduste school at Smith College. She taught in the Wellesley school system. She married Edward N. Railsback on Aug. 5, 1938 and the couple raised three children in Wellesley, moving to Maine in 1979. She is survived by her husband of 65 years; sons Alan N. of Nobleboro, ME. and John S. of Northboro, Mass. and daughter Judith R. (Mrs. Thomas Finn of Damariscotta, ME.
