John Henry was born to Johann Friedrich and his second wife, Catharina Margareta Spanhake (b. 08 Mar 1804 in Döhlen, Oldenburg, Niedersachsen, Germany and d. 23 Jun 1869 in Döhlen, Oldenburg, Niedersachsen, Germany).
Both Johann Friedrich and Johann Heinrich emigrated to the United States, Johann Friedrich first, settling in Wisconsin and Johann Heinrich, arriving in New York in 1882, and eventually settling in Nebraska.
