William Mann entered service in the 1st Michigan Cavalry as Captain of Co.K on August 22,1861.He was promoted to Lieut.Colonel on August 14,1862 and Colonel on December 1,1862.He had transferred to the 5th Michigan Cavalry, then to the 7th Michigan Cavalry,as it's commander. He led the charge of the 7th Michigan along with George Custer on the 3rd day at Gettysburg. After the war,he lived in Mobile,Alabama, where he pioneered developments in the manufacture of cotton seed oil.He ran for Congress as a Democrat and received a majority of votes, but was denied the victory by carpetbaggers in the state government. He moved to New York and in 1871,developed Mann's Boudoir Car,a type of railroad car.He went to Europe and spent many years promoting the car, which was sold to the Pullman Company.Col.Mann was now quite wealthy, and in his later years published several popular magazines in the New York City area.He has been given credit for the invention of the "blind item" as a form of gossip,an example..".High society has been treated to a sorry spectacle of inebriety during the last two weeks at balls and dinners, and I am glad to say that this shocking example, though unfortunately a woman, is not an American, but a specimen of British aristocracy. … If Great Britain is to send us such specimens of her boasted aristocracy, I would advise society to entertain in camera and with a bread and water diet."
