Johann George May was born in Langendiebach, Germany, in 1735. In 1752 he came to America aboard the sailing ship "Phoenix" with his father Frantz Phillip May and brother Killian May. He settled in Berks County, PA, where worked as a farmer and inn keeper. He married Katherine Dewalt in 1762. They had 11 children.

During the Revolutionary War he served as Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel of Berks County Militia. He fought with General George Washington at the Battle of Long Island New York in 1776 and was with Washington at Valley Forge. General Washington was a personal acquaintance of George May and visited his home on at least one occasion.

After the war, he moved to Juniata County, PA, where his wife Katherine died prior to 1797. He later married Mary Miller, widow of Theobold Miller.
