Reno, Nevada
2 Nov 1934
Four Boulder dam workmen were injured, two fatally, yesterday when a runaway car inside No. 4 Penstock tunnel of the dam crushed them.
The dead were Martin L. Hempel, formerly of Eldon, Mo., and Richard M. Whelan, of Boulder City. Hempel died almost immediately and Whelan tonight.
William Van Ditto received an injured back and left foot, and Raymond Dodd a fractured skull. Hospital attendants said their condition was satisfactory.
The men were installing a steel pipe in the tunnel and pushing the car up an incline. The car was tie while the rigging was being changed, but in some manner broke loose and slid backward, striking the men. Whelan's widow, in Boulder City, survives him.
