Vigil service for Rose K. Rietcheck , 101, of Hoxie, will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, Hoxie. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Frances Catholic Church, Hoxie, with the Rev. Merlin Kieffer officiating. Burial will be in St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, Hoxie.

Mrs. Rietcheck died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Sheridan County Hospital in Hoxie.

She was born April 11, 1899, in a sod house near St. Theresa in Wichita County, the daughter of Henry W. and Carolina (Busche) Geerdes.

A 1919 graduate of Keisters Ladies Tailoring College at Omaha, Neb., she moved to Herndon, Neb., during the 1920s where she worked in a bakery and creamery and was a seamstress.

On Feb. 26, 1930, she married John Rietcheck at Seguin. They lived on a farm west of Hoxie and later moved to Seguin where they continued farming until moving to Hoxie in 1970.

Mrs. Rietcheck wrote the Seguin news items for the Hoxie Sentinel for many years and served as a 4-H leader when her children were young. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Frances Catholic Church and St. Frances Sodality, both at Hoxie.

Her husband died Feb. 4, 1994. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert; four brothers, John Geerdes, Henry Geerdes, Joseph Geerdes and George Geerdes; and two sisters, Helena Barenberg and Theresa Kreck.

She is survived by three sons, Alfred, Elmer and Vernon, all of Hoxie; three daughters, Dorothy Ostmeyer, Garden City, Carolyn Gatschet, Hays, and Phyllis Melenson, Prairie Village; a sister, Anne Reinert, Hoxie; 28 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Sheridan County Long Term Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home.
