Rufus Bean, N.Union street, died in Macon county hospital Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock of kidney trouble which had incapacitated him for two months. The body was taken to the undertaking rooms of Monson & Wilcox. The funeral will be Monday.

The later day acquaintances of Mr.Bean knew him as a market man having for a number of years conducted a meat market in Decatur. His intimates of other days knew him as a wholesale meat packer, a lover of horses and an expert judge of livestock. Horses of quality were his hobby. He loved life and action. He was fond of harness racing for the mere love of the sport, the test of skill and endurance and there was never a time when he was not as willing to race for the mere sport as the majority of men were ready to race for a purse. There was ever in his conduct of spirit of gallantry never shown by the pseudo sport lover who is there for gain only. Among the horsemen of a decade or two ago, he was known to many and they all knew him as a square man who followed the game in a clean, open way and demanded that others should do the same if they contended with him.

Rufus Bean was born in Sidney, Maine, June 16, 1847, coming from a long line of New England ancestry. He was married to Miss Susan A. Hammond, in 1870 in the city of his birth and in 1879 they went to Topeka, Kansas where Mr. Bean engaged in the wholesale meat packing business, his contemporaries and intimates in business being Armour brothers. Nearly 25 years ago Mr.Bean came to Decatur with his family and during the intervening years until last September has been engaged in conducting a meat market, retiring last fall because of failing health.

The surviving members of his family are his wife and the following named children: K. C. Bean, Springfield,Mo, Mrs. O.T. Baughn,Yakiah, Wash., Mrs. M. R. Hold, Topeka,Kan, Mrs.C.G. Bryan, Phoenix, Ariz, Mrs. Mary Regnier, of New York City, H. W. Bean and Miss Ruth Bean, Chicago, Miss Helen Bean,St. Louis, Mrs. J. O. Henry, T. H. Bean, J. M. Bean, William Bean and Misses Rinnie and Carolyn Bean all of Decatur. All of the children except Mrs.Baughn and Mrs. Bryan were in Decatur when the end came: also he leaves one brother, Madison Bean of Augusta, Maine.
