FAIRBURY — Hazel Karcher, 104, Fairbury, passed away Wednesday (Dec. 29, 2010) at Fairview Haven Nursing Home, Fairbury.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Forrest Apostolic Christian Church. Burial will be in Forrest Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Fairbury, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Fairview Haven or Forrest Apostolic Christian Church.

Hazel was born Sept. 4, 1906, in Forrest, the daughter of Samuel and Rose Hurst Farney. She married Simon Karcher on Nov. 26, 1925, in Castorland, N.Y. He passed away June 30, 1973.

Surviving are her daughter, Joy (Maurice) Zimmerman, Fairbury; grandchildren, Scott (Nancy) Zimmerman, Jill (Tom) Rock, Xen (Cindy) Karcher and Kandy (Jon Clem) Rathmel; great-grandchildren, Bradley (Carolyn) Zimmerman, David (Shauna) Zimmerman, Chad (Tracy) Rock, Brandi (Ken) Meisner, Amber (Josh) McGee, Kristi Karcher, Kara (Nathan) Bushong and Tyson Rathmel; stepgreat-granddaughter, Jasmine (Josh) Escalante; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Milton (Clara) Farney, Lady Lake, Fla.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Karcher; one granddaughter, Kay Karcher; and three brothers.

A lifelong resident of the Forrest community, she graduated from Forrest High School. She was employed at Turnipseeds Store for 15 years.

Hazel was a member of Forrest Senior Citizens, American Legion Auxiliary and Forrest Apostolic Christian Church.

Hazel was a strong and independent woman, she lived on her own until the age of 97. She then lived in assisted living for a year and a half and finally living the rest of her life at Fairview Haven Nursing Home.

She was a wonderful and loving mother, sister, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma.
