Thomas F. Faires, 93, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away Dec. 10, 1999 after a brief illness. A former Memphis resident, he was born Jan. 24, 1906 in Mt. Pleasant, TN. He graduated in 1928 from Georgia Tech, and headed Thomas F. Faires & Assoc. architectural firm in Memphis, TN. The firm serves as engineers on many military projects prior to his active Army duty in 1942. He served with the 287th Engineer Battalion, specialists in Bailey Floating Bridges. On limited service after hospitalization due to injury, he assumed command of the 100 Labor Supervision Center in Selne Sector, France. He retired with the rank of Major in 1946 and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return to Memphis, his architectural practice developed many military projects, including works at Milan and Redstone Arsenals, and at Oak Ridge laboratories. After WWII, he became a member of The Military Order of the World Wars, and in 1968, he served as national Commander-in-Chief of the Order during its Golden Anniversary year. Among his many achievements was establishing the Tucson, AZ. Chapter in 1977. Mr. Faires served as President of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce for two terms during the late 60's - early 70's; President of the Memphis Chapter, the American Institute of Architects; President, League of Memphis Architects which designed the Memphis Civic Center; Director, Downtown Association; State President, Navy League; Director, Georgia Tech National Alumni Association; Director, Memphis Boy's Town; Director Tennessee Club. An Arizona resident since 1974, he is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, the former Helen Parks of Caruthersville, Missouri, four married children: Thomas F. Faires of Scottsdale; John P. Faires, John P. Faires of Mansfield, OH; Helen Faires Brodrick of Salinas, CA; Robert C. Faires of Las Vegas, NV; and three grandchildren also survive. He was also an avid golfer; with six holes-in-one during his playing years - his last at age 86. He played nine holes just two days before this short illness.
