Vance was born Dec. 5, 1919, on the family farm near Chapman to Gustav and Agda (Johnson) Boelts.
Survivors are: wife, Peggy of Grand Island; son and daughter-in-law, Vance and Carolyn Boelts of Beaverton, Ore; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Dr. Charles T. Chapin of Alexandria, Va., and Nedra and Hugh H. Smith of Destin, Fla.; sisters, Myrtle "Sandy" Achey of Englewood, Colo., Agda Powers of Granite Rock, Texas. Brant Boelts, and his wife, Jen Boelts, and Marnie Boelts; and great-grandson, Brolin Boelts.
Vance graduated from Central City High School in 1938 and attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
He entered the U.S. Army Air Force on Aug. 12, 1941, and served in the South Pacific theater, including Australia and New Zealand. Vance was honorably discharged on Oct. 14, 1945.
On July 16, 1943, Vance E. Boelts and Margaret V. "Peggy" Maguire were united in marriage. Following his discharge from the military, Vance returned to Merrick County with his bride and followed his life's passion of farming.
When they retired from the farm in 1976, Vance and Peggy joined the Peace Corps and served in Iran, where he taught the American way of farming and irrigating. In 1977, he and Peggy returned to Central City, and they later moved to Grand Island.
Vance was a member of the American Legion Lone Tree Post No. 6 in Central City and was a past commander. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Vance was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Truex and Pearl Bales, and his brothers, Gus and John Boelts.
