A memorial gathering for former Portland resident Robert Martin Hoelzle of Cottage Grove, a former drug and alcohol counselor and real estate broker, will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Hoelzle family home in Cottage Grove.
He died of cancer Sunday in his home at the age of 73.
He was born June 20, 1917, in Chicago, where he was raised and graduated from high school. He moved to Portland in 1940 and served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He married Lois Erickson in 1948 in Portland.
Mr. Hoelzle was a salesman and district parts supervisor for International Harvester Co. for 27 years. He then worked as a drug and alcohol counselor for Union Pacific Railroad for a number of years, and was a real estate broker and managed condominium sales for Portland firms until his retirement.
Mr. Hoelzle was a life member of the board of directors of Recovery Northwest in Vancouver, Wash. He moved to Cottage Grove in 1989.
Survivors besides his wife include his daughters, Alice Doyle and Gail and Roberta, all of Cottage Grove; son, Greg Lee of Cottage Grove; and three grandchildren.
Private interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to Cottage Grove Hospice or Trinity Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove.
