George Allen Graves was born on 4 February 1915 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa to John Carroll Graves (1894-1980) and Amaretta Esther Haselwood (1891-1984). He was their only child.
George graduated from the University of Michigan and in July 1937 he received his commission at Pensacola, Florida. According to the 1940 US Federal Census George was living at the US Navy Yard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The census reports that he is single, a college graduate and a US Marine Officer. It also states that in 1935 he was living in Los Angeles, California and in 1939 he worked 52 weeks and earned $1500. On 13 August 1940 he married Mary Louise Fehling in Glendale, California.
By 1941 Lt Graves was assigned to the newly formed Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-211 in Ewa, Hawaii. The 12 pilots out on what they thought would be a short training mission, in brand-new Grumman F4F-3 Wildcats, landed on the USS Enterprise, on 28 November 1941. After landing on the USS Enterprise they were told that they would be going to Wake Island. On 4 December 1941 they took off from the flight deck and headed 200 miles to Wake Island.
