Former Cherokee County Man Succumbs After Operation.
Sheldon Mail- Died, in Sioux City hospital, last Friday, Peter Bernard Hessenius from the effects of a surgical operation. Deceased was born in Freesland in 1845 and moved to America when eighteen years old, and settled with his parents in Stephens county, Illinois. In 1869 be moved to Marshall county, Iowa, where he was married in 1874 to Miss W. Hook. Four children were born to this union, all of which are living and were in attendance at the funeral. The remains were brought here Saturday evening and taken to his home in the north part of the city. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the German Lutheran church, services being conducted by Rev. Flentje. A large concourse of relatives and friends were in attendance at the last sad rites, many being from out of town. Deceased had been ailing for about a year and as a last resort of saving his life was taken to Sioux City, where two operations were performed. He was unable to stand the shock and passed away shortly after the last one was performed. He was a devout Christian and much esteemed by those who knew him. He had only been a resident of Sheldon about four years, having moved here from Cherokee county.
