Staff SgL Edward Biela veteran of 14 months of service and 60 combat missions in the Southwest Pacific and holder of the Presidential Citation Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two clusters has reported to Denver Co. after 21 days at home plane is credited with sinking one Jap freighter An aerial gunner aboard a 3-24 Liberator Edward is one of the five servicemen sons of Mrs Mary Biela of 202 Beech St. After attending the West St and Holyoke High schools he spent a year in the Pittsfield CCC camp. He then took welding at the Holyoke Trade school and worked at the Worthington until his induction Oct 26 1942. His brother Mate 3rd Max Biela has been missing in action since last May.

Born in Holyoke, Hampden County, Massachusetts to Stephan & Marianna (Marduesz) who immigrated from Poland in 1902 & 1905, respectively. Edward was the fifth of eight children.

In 1942, having 2 years of high school, fellas could get their diplomas if they enlisted during the WWII, so, being single without dependents, and having semiskilled machine shop and related occupations, Edward enlisted 24 Oct 1942, in the US Army Air Corps, at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA. He rose from Private to S. Sgt. His physical appearance was described as height: 66 inches, weight: 139 pounds.

Edward married Oct 4, 1950, Virginia Walker, in Fort Worth, TX. Three children were born to this couple.

BENBROOK Edward Biela 71 a golf course superintendent died Tuesday in Fort Worth. Funeral: 11 am Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park.

Edward Biela was born Dec 28 1923 in Holyoke Mass. He was retired from the military and civil service. Mr Biela was stationed at Carswell and Altus Air Force bases and saw active duty during World War II.

Survivors: Wife Virginia Biela of Benbrook; sons and their wives: Ed and Katy Biela of Colleyville; and Tim and Debbie Biela of Fort Worth; daughter and her husband Beth and Ron Ladd of Granbury; brothers Anthony Biela, Henry Biela, and Julian Biela, all of Massassachusetts; and Casimer Biela of Florida; sister Stella Dupius of Florida; grandchildren John Ladd of Haltom City, Alicia Callaway of Bremerton Washington.
