Bessie Mae Pate Tharp went home to be with the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday afternoon, Sept. 6, 2010.

She was born July 10, 1928, in the Pate Pond Community of Washington County, Fla., to the late James Edward and Azel Pate.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard Tharp; and her brother, Joe Edward Pate.

Bessie graduated from Vernon High School in 1946, and after attending school in Tallahassee, She returned to Washington County. She was married to the late Leonard Jackson Tharp of Chipley for 45 years.

Bessie retired from Washington County Farm Bureau after many years of service. She enjoyed her retirement and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and church family.

Bessie was very active in First Baptist Church of Chipley and a member of Ruth Sunday school class, Triple L and WMU's. She was a church greeter and active in the intercessory prayer ministry and family night supper minister. She also served as a volunteer at West Florida Pregnancy and Family Center. Bessie loved the Lord and was a blessing to all who knew her.

Bessie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Debra Lynn (Debbie) and Jack Parker; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Elaine and Walter Guettler, all of Chipley. She also is survived by six loving grandchildren, Alex and Casey Parker, Evan, Adriane, Olivia and Isaac Guettler, also of Chipley; sister, Vera Pate Clubbs of Pensacola, Fla.; brother, James Pate of Anchorage, Alaska; and several loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at 1225 Tharpe Road in Chipley. A celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Chipley with the Rev. Mike Orr officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery with Obert Funeral Home of Chipley directing.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Ruth Sunday school class whom she dearly loved and who were so faithful to love and visit her.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Mark Garney, Covenant Hospice, Northwest Florida Community Hospital and Washington County EMS for all the special love and care shown to Bessie during this time.

The family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Chipley or Covenant Hospice of Marianna, 4440 Lafayette St. Suite C. Marianna, FL 32446.
