Julian was born on April 28, 1928 in New York Mills to Nels and Elsie Poser Shield. He finished his freshman year with the class of 1946, New York Mills High School, after which he moved with his family to Illinois where he worked on railroad construction and then operated a cabinet shop.
On April 29, 1967 Julian married Laura Hayes. In 1968 they moved to Montana where he worked on railroad construction for Mannix Inc., then later for oftedal Construction as a heavy equipment operator. Ill health forced Julian to retire in 1983.
After a long illness Julian died in Miles City VA Hospital on Aug. 13, 1985.
Funeral services were held at the Beals Mortuary Chapel in Forsyth, Montana on Friday, Aug. 16. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of the National Rifle Association, Railroad Hobby Association, Operating Engineers Local and the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Laura; a son, Kelner of Forsyth; two daughters; April Shield of Forsyth and Stacy Shield Camper of Woodlawn, Tenn.; two step-daughters, Terri Austill of Sheridan, Wyo., and Mary Austill of Billings; two step-sons, Jerry Austill of Miles City and Gary Austill of Red Lodge, Montana; and three sisters, Mrs. Mabyn Lund, Geneva, Ill., Mrs. Kris (Richard) Roth of Greendale, Wisc., and Mrs. Sonja (John) Bachar of Fort Atkinson, Wisc. and a host of other more distant relatives and friends.
