He married widow Anna Gurene (Thorson) Olson May 18, 1875 in Clifton township. She had sons Carl Olaves "Charles", David and a daughter Clara.
Nels and Anna had four sons together: Hans Klarinius "Clarence" Hanson, Christian (Christ) Emanuel Hanson, Oliver Andreas Hanson and Soren (Sam) Johan (John) Hanson. (Christian has also been called Kristian Ingemund and Oliver's middle name as Anderson on various census sheets of the family.
Nels and Anna also raised a "cousin" of Nels - Gunhilda Marie Hanson who made the journey to America from Norway in the company of the young woman who would become Charles Olson's bride , Tilda Sorenson. Gunda, or Hilda , as she was to be called as an adult, married Gust Krohmer .
