Emile Pernet was born in France to Jean-Baptiste Pernet and Jemima Saunders, but moved to Toronto, Canada, where he taught French at Trinity College. In 1883, he immigrated to the United States with the teenage daughter of a neighbor, Zara Cull, to the United States, where he wed her, leaving his first wife Emma (nee Bushnell), to divorce him a short time later. The couple moved to Philadelphia and opened up the Pernet School for Modern Languages and Translators.

In 1895, while running to catch a trolley, he slipped and fell on the icy street and fractured his skull, suffering a traumatic brain injury. He spent the last 17 years of his life at the State Hospital at Norristown.
