JOSEPH H. HENSLER, WELL KNOWN RESIDENT DIES FRIDAY. ESTABLISHED FIRST BAKERY IN WADENA WITH S. J. NEISES

Services were conducted from St. Ann's Catholic Church at Wadena Satruday morning for Joseph J. Hensler, who died at Wesley hospital Friday morning at 5 a.m., following a stroke he suffered at his home Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

Born at Arlington, Minn., April 11, 1885, Mr. Hensler was educated at Arlington, Foley and St. Cloud. He homesteaded at Drake, N.D., in 1905, farming there until 1911 when he came to Wadena, where he opneed a grocery and baking business with S. J. Neises.

Bread baking in the bakery was shipped as far as Frazee, and some of the old wooden boxes used for the shipping of bread have been found in the Perham area of recent date, still bearing the name Hensler and Neises. It was during their tenure of business Peter Engh, Sr., was employed as baker.

Mr. Hensler and Mr. Neises operated their combination business until 1917 when they disposed of it to Hengel & Edinger. (Later this partnership split the grocery and bakery business and Mr. Engh took over the bakery.)

Following the disposal of the business, Mr. Hensler went to Colorado for 14 months rest, and upon his return to Wadena went on the road for the Loose-Wiles Biscuit company, selling their "Sunshine Bakery" products.

Five years later, he went on the road for the Northern Jobbing company, and after a tenure with this company again entered into the grocery business in Wadena, operatin gthe Hensler Grocery. Closing out this business in the spring of 1930, Mr. Hensler joined the sales staff of Stuntebecks's Ford Garage, remaining in the employ of the firm until his death. For the past three years he had been sales manager for Stuntebeck's Incorporated.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society, and a charter member of the Wadena council of the Knights of Columbus.

A recitation of the Rosary was held at the Scherkenback funeral home Friday evening at 8 o'clock by the Knights of Columbus lodge.

He served as representative of the 51st Legislative district, Wadena county, for one term, 1936-1938, unseating Representative Miller of Sebeka in the election of 1936. In the Legislature he served on the Commerce & Retail Trade committee, Dairy Products and livestock, Game & Fish, Motor Vehicle and Motor Vehicle Tax Law, Municipal Affairs, Railroads & State MOtor Transportation, telephone & Telegraph. In 1938 Mr. Hensler was defeated for re-election by Joe Lorentz.

He married Kathrn Neises at Wadena, June 21, 1910. Besides Mrs. Hensler, he is survived by a son Joe Jr., living at Fargo, N.D. and a sister, Mrs. Wesley (Ethel) Boettcher, Minneapolis and three grandchildren.

Burial was at Wadena with R.A. Stuntebeck, R.J. Stuntebek, Kenneth Stuntebeck, Ralph Ebner, Frank Hopp and Frank Imgrund as pallbearers.
