Hazel Lavonne Schultz was born May 18, 1921, in Harlowton, Montana, the youngest of three daughters born to Benjamin and Audrey (Davey) Schultz. The family moved to Miles City in the early 1920s, where her father was an engineer on the Milwaukee Railroad. Hazel attended grade school there, and graduated from Custer County High School in 1939.

After attending a bookkeeping course in Miles City, she worked in the office at Miles City Electric and at Montgomery Wards. A gifted musician, she was very active in her family's church, the Miles City Assemblies of God, and it was at this time, as a pianist and vocalist, that she made her first trips to Jordan, as part of the church's missionary work there under the pastorship of Rev. A.J. Morrison. At the outbreak of WW II, she moved to San Diego in 1942 to work as a bookkeeper for Ryan Aeronautical. When she returned to Miles City in 1943, she had determined that she wanted to work within the ministry. By this time, the Assemblies of God had established Jordan Gospel Mission and Hazel moved from Miles City to Jordan to work for the summer as pianist and missionary with Pastor Eunice Munger. In the fall of 1943 she moved to Springfield, Missouri to attend Central Bible College, an affiliate of the Assemblies of God.

By 1945, Hazel was again working at the Jordan Gospel Mission, and it was at this time that she first met a young Jordan-area rancher named Charles McRae, the oldest of eight children, who operated the family ranch with his widowed mother. Hazel and Charlie were married December 1, 1946, in Miles City.

Hazel became a surrogate mother to the younger McRae children, particularly after their mother's untimely death in 1950 left them orphans.

Hazel and Charlie had three sons: Jack Ardon, William Charles, and Brent Robert. She was a loving, energetic mother and was also involved in many community projects. She was a charter member of the Maids of All Trades home demonstration club. She was the founder of the annual Garfield County home demonstration club banquet, and loved acting and performing skits for the entertainment of the other women. Hazel was also the first chair of the Garfield County Library Board.

In addition to raising her sons, she played an active role in the growth and success of the McRae family ranch, by then called the Big Dry Angus Ranch. Hazel and Charlie raised registered Angus cattle and Targhee sheep; for many years they also raised registered Quarter Horses. The reward for their many years of hard work was in 1994, when an Angus bull raised on the ranch was named the Grand Champion at the Denver Stock Show.

In addition to running the household and cooking for her family and many frequent guests and workers, Hazel helped with branding, docking, gathering livestock, lambing and doing the bookkeeping for the ranch. She loved to entertain – she was renowned as a cook -- and there were always extra people staying at the ranch: in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, friends of her children, and exchange students. The ranch was a busy crossroads, with guests often staying for months at a time.

Hazel also served as a mentor and confidante to many other women who moved to the community as young ranch wives. She was known for her good humor, wisdom, and generous spirit.

After years of declining health she moved to the Garfield County Health Center in 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 2009, her parents, and her two sisters, Audrey Dahl and Dorothea Eide. She is survived by her sons Jack (Kathryn) of Jordan; Bill of Portland, Oregon, and Brent (Hillari) of Jordan. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Cora (Ryan) Best, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Ian (Zoey) McRae, Billings; Kristin (Cord) Bieber, Brockway; Malcolm, Charles, John, and Benjamin of Jordan.
