TREMONT - Vera L. Demeter, 89, of Tremont, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away at 4:27 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Pekin Hospital.

She was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Nikolaev, Ukraine, to Vassily and Evdokia Logvinov. She married Michael Demeter on Oct. 20, 1944, in Germany. They immigrated to the United States in 1949. He preceded her in death in November 1988.

Surviving are her daughters, Vera (Tim) Koch and Michaela Demeter, both of Tremont, and Anna (Brian) Johnston of Big Moose Lake and Utica, N.Y.; and three grandsons, Michael Koch of Houston, Texas, and Jonathan and Stephen Koch of Tremont.

Vera was known for her strong spirit and her inquisitive nature. She never knew a stranger.

She taught Russian and German in the Columbus, Ohio, public school system for 15 years. She encouraged her students, her family and other young people to pursue their education and contribute positively to benefiting those around them.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at Northfield Christian Fellowship in Tremont. Pastor Steve Thompson will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, also at the church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Tremont. Davis Mortuary in Tremont is handling the arrangements.

In memory of Vera, memorial contributions may be made to Tremont Educational Foundation, The Cabin, or N.C.F. Women's Ministries.
