ON TUESDAY
Funeral services for James S. Johnson, 94, of 904 West Mermod, will be held Tuesday at the West Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. The Rev. Fisher Blanton of the First Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be at Carlsbad Cemetery.
A retired restaurant owner, Johnson was born Oct. 28, 1860, at Princeton, Ind. He died at his home Saturday.
Johnson moved to Texas when about 15 years old. On. Oct. 28, 1886, at Cumby, Tex., he married the late Sarah Alice Box. The couple moved to Carlsbad in 1906 and he became associated with Dick and Leslie Bates in the operation of the old Legal Tender Cafe for several years. Later he went into the restaurant business for himself, retiring in 1936 to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. H.D. Fleming, 904 West Mermod.
Johnson is survived by a son, Murry M. Johnson, El Paso; four daughters, Mrs. J.S. Burton, Malibu, Calif.; Mrs. Alfred S. Levelle, Dallas; Mrs. Ruth Kirkley and Mrs. Fleming both of Carlsbad; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pall bearers will be J.H. Sammons, Grigg Lazenby, Frank Kindel, J.T. Beach, I.M. Wester and Milton Smith.
Honorary pall bearers are W.C. Bates, Arthur Forehand, D. Harkey, D.N. Vest, Dr. Sol Heinemann, Sid Brown, Harry Sephenson, Walter Craft, W.E. Smith and W.A. Wheeler.
