He was first married to Maxine Eva Weeks and they had one son, Jan Michael Tyler. He was then married to Mary Jane Chilson, and they had two sons, Ronald and Robert Tyler. He passed away in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, at the home of his son, Ron.
