NEWPORT NEWS - Rhonda 'Roni' Teri Roehr, 76, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at Mary Immaculate Hospital. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she had made her home in Newport News for the past 49 years.
Rhonda was a strong advocate for individuals with handicaps and was instrumental in assuring public facilities were handicapped accessible.

She was active with the Newport News Parks & Recreation Disabilities Dept. which created programs for the disabled and was on the Mayors Committee on Disabilities. She was involved with the local MS Society, a member of The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Chapter #2 and a member of Temple Sinai. She was a former member of the NN Elks Lodge Emblem Club. Rhonda Roehr was devoted to her family, passionate about helping others and giving back to the community.

Mrs. Roehr is survived by her husband of 42 years, Manfred Roehr; her daughter, Lori Sarner Smith and her husband, Michael of Laguna Hills, Calif.; her son, Richard Sarner and his wife, Faye of Greensboro, N.C.; her grandchildren, Casey Micheil and her husband, Shane and Kimberly and Alison Smith all of California; her brother-in-law, Gerhard Roehr and sisters-in-law, Regina Muller and Edith Roehr all of Hamburg, Germany; and her nieces and nephews, Thorsten and Olaf Muller, Veronika Buschka, Christine, Gabi and Simon Rumohr and Karin Welzel all of Germany.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2011, at Temple Sinai by Rabbi Scott Gurdin. Interment will follow in Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
