Lino John was the son of Virginio Schinelli (1888–1954) and Julia Baiardi (1895–1966), both born in Italy.

Lino John Schinelli attended Agawam High School class of 1937, and set a Western Mass. football record in 1936 for 97 points scored in the 1936 season, which held unbroken for 20 years.
